Part of ‘The Helix Project’, this 300-hectare regeneration project has transformed formerly disused land between Falkirk and Grangemouth, connecting 16 local communities via an extensive network of paths. The works were carried out under NEC 3 Option A Conditions and included earthworks, surfacing to shared-use visitor space and utilities infrastructure as well as the construction of a 200m diameter freshwater lagoon, water feature, canal paths, play space and plaza, along with feature landscaping/planting and facilities buildings. The project won the prestigious Saltire Society 2014 Civil Engineering Award.
Key Issues:
• Selection and treatment to allow re-use of earthworks materials on site
• Working within an environmentally sensitive location
• Working in close proximity to other contractors
• Employment of 12 trainees by RJ McLeod during the construction phase
Principal Elements included:
Earthworks 90,000m3
Granite stone paving 5,100m2
Asphalt paving 20,000m2
Concrete paving 5,700m2
